In the United States, economists and consumer advocates generally consider insurance to be worthwhile for low-probability, catastrophic losses, but not for high-probability, small losses. Because of this, consumers are advised to select high deductibles and to not insure losses which would not cause a disruption in their life. Loan-Free RV means you own the camper outright without any financing. RV insurance is only optional when your RV has no loan on it and is towable only. We are a busy family, but like to take occasional trips with our motor home. We didn't think we needed a specialized policy because our motor home is parked in our driveway most of the time. Unfortunately, our motor home was vandalized and some theft occurred. Our auto policy did not cover the losses and we ended up paying for the damage ourselves. If you attempt to insure your RV along with your car, odds are you'll only get coverage for physical damage, without any of the comprehensive features necessary to an RV that serves as a primary residence. Some time ago, Progressive RV insurance, in line with their competitors, offered an actual cash value policy (that I explain below) and this was the standard of the insurance industry. However, after 2019 (niche RV insurers started earlier), there are several companies offering the “replacement cost” policy. This can hugely protect much more the investment of the policyholder in exchange for a small increment in the price.
Bus-conversion homes are a popular and fast-growing trend within the RV lifestyle. City buses, Greyhounds, and even school buses are highly sought after and, once renovated, become non-traditional RVs that fall into the Class A category. While bus renovation projects are becoming mainstream, they can be difficult to insure. Buses, especially school bus-converted homes or “Skoolies,” are considered more of a risk due to their weight and balance limitations. Vehicles originally built for mass transportation do not have the same axle and weight distribution as traditional RVs, which are designed for sleeping and carrying additional living necessities.
Class C motorhomes are the classic mid-sized motorized RV, typically with a sleeping area extending above the cab area. Premiums vary based on state of residence and the size, age and market value of the motorhome, plus frequency of use. An Idaho buyer looking at a supersized Class C motorhome valued at $120,000 was quoted $3,097 a year; some owners report similar rates, but others are paying $800-$1,000 a year.
There are several ways to get a cheap RV insurance policy or to reduce the cost of your policy. The first way is to shop for the best RV insurance deal because insurers vary widely with their premiums. Also, look for special discounts. Many will give you a discount if you pay in a lump sum, have a clean driving record, choose a higher deductible, or belong to certain affinity groups.
Good Sam Insurance Agency offers RV, auto, home, boat, and motorcycle insurance. It does not provide the insurance directly, but through companies like Progressive, National, and Safeco. Good Sam covers several types of RVs including for Class A RVs, Class B RVs, Class C RVs, conventional trailers, fifth-wheel trailers, pop-up tent trailers, mounted truck campers, horse trailers, and cargo utility vehicles.
We have a 2006 Hurricane Claas A and have it insured by Good Sam, which is underwritten by NAtional General Insurance. It was a lot less $$ when I compared rates. I have been reading horrible reviews on their Auto Insurance Products and am now questioning our decision. Has anyone recently had a claim experience with this company and can comment on their service? All of the posts I saw on this topic when I searched iRV2 forums were circa 2007 or earlier.
